As with each year’s Festival of Faiths, the 2012 Festival will include several keynote addresses by national and international experts who enlighten and inspire us to engage in common action to promote the good of our community.

Interfaith Prayer Breakfast
Thursday, November 15, 7:30 a.m.
Larry L. Rasmussen, Reinhold Niebuhr Professor of Ethics Emeritus at Union Theological Seminary, will present “Born to Belonging: Praying the Primal Elements.” His presentation will focus on sacred fire and the spiritual element of creation. Dr. Rasmussen is one of the world’s foremost environmental theologians and Christian ethicists and an internationally recognized scholar on the German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He has mentored an entire generation of Christian theologians, ethicists, and church leaders, particularly in the emerging field of eco-theology and “green religion” – not only as an academic path but also as a way of living in the world.

Compassion and Community
Thursday, November 15, 12:00 p.m.
Rev. Joan Brown Campbell, co-author for the international Charter for Compassion and Director of Religion at the Chautauqua Institution, and Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer will discuss compassion in our congregations and community, Louisville’s efforts to set the standard for what defines a “Compassionate City” and how these efforts follow the guidelines set in the Charter for Compassion.

Compassion in the Workplace
Thursday, November 15, 2:00 p.m.
James Doty, M.D., founder and director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, will illustrate the prominent role that compassion plays in corporate America. Local business leaders who are known for their business acumen and their compassionate work settings, such as Bridgeman Foods CEO Junior Bridgeman, Spalding University President Tori Murden McClure and Signature Healthcare Vice President of Spirituality Dianne Timmering, will be special guests at this event. Topics for discussion will focus on the necessity to define compassion as a core value of a business’ strategic plan, examples of successful local compassionate business models and how you can be a champion of compassion in your workplace.

Be Careful What You Burn
Friday, November 16, 9:00 a.m.
Rev. Canon Sally Grover Bingham will deliver a keynote address on the morality of energy efficiency, along with its environmental, social and practical benefits. Reverend Bingham, an Episcopal priest and Canon for the Environment in the Diocese of California, has been active in the environmental community for 25 years. She is founder and president of The Regeneration Project, which is focused on its Interfaith Power & Light (IPL) campaign, a religious response to global warming. The IPL campaign includes a national network of more than 14,000 congregations with affiliated programs in 39 states.

Nuclear Weapons and the Future of Civilization
Friday, November 16, 12:00 p.m.
A former senior U.S. diplomat, Ambassador Thomas Graham, Jr., was involved in all major international arms control and nuclear non-proliferation agreements from 1970-1997. He is also the Executive Chairman of the Lightbridge Corporation, a nuclear energy consulting service that is developing next generation nuclear fuel technology that will significantly reduce nuclear waste and proliferation. Ambassador Graham’s keynote address will focus on the current state of nuclear armament throughout the world, the dangers posed and what can be done to promote anti-proliferation.
