Religion wasn’t central to Jemar Tisby’s upbringing. He says his faith journey really began when a high school friend invited him to attend a “very white, very evangelical” youth group.
“I started going because it was a social outlet,” Jemar writes. “Over time, however, the youth pastor’s messages really sunk in and helped me see the attraction to this new way of life.” While attending the University of Notre Dame, he spent a summer working at a youth day camp outside Chicago, in a neighborhood where poverty and disinvestment was the norm. “I saw how this vicious cycle of injustice impacts kids and it lit a spark in me to use my education not to climb a career ladder but to serve and work for the common good.
Today, Jemar is the author of New York Times bestselling book “The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the Church’s Complicity in Racism,” along with the works “How to Fight Racism” and “The Spirit of Justice.” He is also a professor of history at Simmons College of Kentucky.
We’re thrilled to welcome Jemar Tisby to the 2024 Festival of Faiths, where he’ll participate in the session Reimagining Belonging on Friday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. He’ll be joined by Luke Russert (journalist), Muhammad Babar (physician and peace activist) and Sadiqa Reynolds (Perception institute CEO).
