Jarrod W. Brown, visiting professor from Berea College, will give a presentation on the current humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State, Burma (Myanmar). This crisis is only the latest in a series that date back to the 17th century slave trades, dynastic rivalries, and confluence of social groups. The consequences have been loss of life among the Buddhist Rakhine majority and genocidal violence and mass displacement of the Rohingya Muslim minority.

This presentation, based on historical research and fieldwork in Rakhine State, situates the current conflict in local history, as well as nationally in the context of Burma’s longstanding armed ethnic conflicts, and the country’s contemporary quasi-democratic reforms.
