Dear Friend of the Festival of Faiths:
The 2012 Festival of Faiths, Sacred Fire: Light of Compassion, was a great success. More than 3,700 people attended the event, which is among the highest attendance in the event’s 17-year history. This was the first Festival held at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage and featured programs, exhibits and works of art that illustrated how our community defines compassion in our daily and spiritual lives.
This year’s Festival of Faiths presented more programs and had more attendees of diverse faith traditions and cultures than any previous one. In addition to our traditional interfaith prayer service held at the Cathedral of the Assumption, new interfaith events included a Sufi music performance and meditation, a Hindu Haven and Diwali children’s workshop, an interfaith youth program at Cedar Ridge Camp, an Evensong in the Anglican tradition, a gospel concert and many others. The Festival delivered exceptional programs targeted specifically for our community’s congregations, neighborhoods, businesses and schools. Nearly 60 exhibitors from various organizations, houses of worship and businesses, along with more than 40 local artists showcased their interpretations of the Sacred Fire of Compassion. The Festival attracted a record number of out-of-town guests, including Sufi music enthusiasts, representatives from several of our country’s Compassionate Cities and from national organizations such as Religions for Peace.
The upcoming year will be an exciting one for the Festival of Faiths as we join our community in welcoming His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Louisville in May. To mark the occasion, the Center for Interfaith Relations will offer events leading up to the Dalai Lama’s visit as well as the annual Festival of Faiths in November. Details about these events will be available soon.
